Using foreground detail is often effective. The plant seed heads were positioned to frame Amanda's face, the distant dark background was blurred, and a little on-camera fill flash was used. Notice how the foreground plants break up her body shape and focus the viewer's attention on her pretty face. This technique can be used for people who carry some extra weight or have other issues with their body that the photographer wants to de-emphasize.
