I moved Katy to the shade side of the tree and used an off camera flash to light her. The flash was set at about the same exposure as the background. Now there is detail in the background, although the background's highlight areas are still slightly over exposed. A trained photographer will recognize that a flash is being used, but overall the effect is fairly natural. The strong shadow cast by the tree detracts from the overall composition.
