The sun is shining through the trees behind Kate. This photo is without fill flash. The railing is used as a line that leads the viewer to Kate. The bright orb of the sun also immediately attracts the viewer's attention.

I used a gradient in Lightroom to darken the top half of the image to help add emphasis to Kate. (Next)
